"Beginning to think well meaning people of #actuallyautistic are in face enemies of free thought and free speech. Which is not so good, coming from a group who say they've been silenced. All the Words I Need To Say: A Letter to My Grandmother as Death Approaches

So Much Stranger, So Much Darker, So Much Madder, So Much Better

I love you

I love you more than my innumerable words can say. More than this human mind knows how to process.

My love for you fills my body to the bursting. From fingertip to fingertip, my love for you pours out, unable to be contained, strengthened by the unwavering love you have always shown me.

For you have been a constant presence, so much more than what a grandparent typically is. You have, and always will be, my third parent and so much more.

You are my first teacher. From learning to string together letters to form the words that would come to be my escape, my passion, my life-breath, to the numbers added together, always building, a sense of security I carry with me.

Hippopotamus. The first word that recollection calls forth when I think of all you taught me. The word I have scrawled across my leg…

Please don’t talk about me like I’m not there

Crazy-NOS

“Is she autistic?” the woman asked my mom’s friend as I walked by.  I suspected she was talking about me but I held out some small hope that she wasn’t.  When my mom’s friend started to reply “She’s my friend Cathy’s daughter and she- ” all doubt was removed. I didn’t hear the rest of what she said because I left the room. I had no desire to listen to  people discussing me and my diagnosis right in front of me as if I couldn’t hear or understand them. If they were going to talk about me as if I wasn’t in the room, then I was going to leave the room. I’m lucky that I had the ability to make an exit.

I’m not sure what tipped this woman off. Maybe my mom’s friend had been talking to her about me. Maybe it was my pacing and flapping that…

When non-verbal == strength, it’s time to be non-verbal

Just Under Your Radar

red and blue dots connected by meandering lines on a field of red and blue static My process looks confusing to others, but I get where I’m going – in my own way

So, my Major Deadline has passed. It went off pretty much without a hitch.

Just in time for Thanksgiving. I’ve got some time off, next week, but I’ll probably check in on my project to see how it’s going, now that it’s “live”.

It’s been pretty brutal, overall. Really, really taxing. And it’s taken just about a year to get this “15-week” (Hahahahahaha!) project ready for prime-time.

Now it’s out there, and it’s time to step back, think through all the lessons of the past year, and figure out the next steps. Because this sh*t isn’t going to stop. I’ve got another phase of this project just around the corner in less than 2 months’ time. So, get a little rest, and get back into it.

One of the BIG lessons of…
