Cure Autism Now Funds Six Research Grants Investigating Possible Link Between Mercury and Autism

LOS ANGELES-September 28, 2001 – Cure Autism Now Foundation, the largest private funder of biomedical research into autism, today announced six new research awards as part of an Environmental Factors on Autism Initiative. These grants focus on the neurotoxicity of mercury and its possible implication in autism. Until recently the chemical thimerosal, a mercury derivative, was a commonly used preservative in childhood vaccines and other medical and health products.

Jonathan Shestack, co-founder of Cure Autism Now Foundation (, said that the incidence of autism has risen dramatically over the past ten years. “It is logical to assume that there may be environmental factors involved,” added Shestack. “These kinds of studies are expensive and often become politicized, but the American public needs independent, excellent and unbiased research on the subject.”

Sallie Bernard, a CAN board member, also works with SafeMinds a group that deals strictly with exploring a possible connection between thimerosal and autism. “Our hopes with these grants are two-fold: we need to better understand the role that mercury and thimerosal may play in autism and if this exposure can be effectively treated.”

A landmark number of 44 proposals were submitted to the Cure Autism Now special review panel headed by David Baskin, M.D., a neurosurgeon at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Baskin led the review process with eight other scientists with experience related to the toxicology of heavy metals.

“We are very pleased with the scientific excellence and the variety of these proposals,” added Portia Iversen, president and co-founder of Cure Autism Now. “They attack the issue from all sides: molecular, in animal models and in terms of treatment trials.”

Earlier this year, Cure Autism Now sent a moving and forceful letter to the Immunization Safety Review Committee of the Institute of Medicine urging them to take a rigorous look at the subject. “The issue is extremely serious, time is of the essence and we need the federal government to be ahead of the curve instead of behind it,” said Shestack. “Every day we learn more about the extent to which autism is becoming a national catastrophe. There are now more cases of autism being diagnosed than AIDS. And while the typical course of a terrible disease such as Alzheimer’s can destroy the final years of a person’s life, autism can affect the patient and the family for an entire lifetime.”

Exposure to mercury, a potent neurotoxin, has been shown to cause immune, sensory, neurological, motor and behavioral dysfunctions similar to traits defining or associated with autism. Although the Food and Drug Administration recently ordered all new vaccines to be manufactured without thimerosal, there has been little research on what effect thimerosal may have had on children in the past.

The special scientific advisory board assembled by Cure Autism Now chose the following grants for up to two years of funding:

  • Comparison of ethylmercury developmental neurotoxic properties with an established model of methylmercury developmental neurotoxicity — Jay Charleston, Ph.D., Institute of Neurotoxicology and Neurological Disorders
  • Double-blind placebo-controlled cross-over study of DMSA and lipoic acid for the treatment of children with regressive autism — Jane M. El-Dahr, M.D., Tulane University School of Medicine
  • A comparative study evaluating the dose-responsiveness effects of methylmercury and thimerosal on select nervous, immune and enzyme parameters — Deborah Keil, Ph.D., Medical University of South Carolina
  • Evaluation of chelation effect on children with autism — Patricia Rosen, M.D., MPH, Texas Center for Autism Research and Treatment
  • Role of cytokines in developmental neurotoxicity — Ellen Silbergeld, Ph.D., University of Maryland School of Medicine
  • Effect of mercury on apoptosis of neuronal cells — Leman Yel, M.D., University of California, Irvine

Shestack and Iversen founded Cure Autism Now in 1995 after their oldest son, Dov, was diagnosed with autism. Autism usually strikes sometime in the first two years of life. It can cause extreme impairment in language, cognition and communication. The disorder affects over 400,000 families and costs the nation more than $13 billion a year. Recent studies indicate that as many as one in every 500 children born today will be on the autistic spectrum. Cure Autism Now’s recommendations come at a critical time. There are now more cases of autism diagnosed than AIDS with California reporting a 273 percent increase in the last 10 years and Florida, a 500 percent increase.

Cure Autism Now is committed to accelerating the pace of scientific progress toward a cure. It is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to promoting and funding autism research. For more information about Cure Autism Now, please visit their website at

The Autism Community Is Not The Autistic Community

* The “autism community” is not the Autistic Community. The autism community was created by non-Autistic led organizations and includes mostly parents, professionals and their friends. Most of what the world knows about autism is sourced from the non-Autistic “autism community.”

Autistic people have fought the inclusion of ABA in therapy for us since before Autism Speaks, and other non-Autistic-led autism organizations, started lobbying legislation to get it covered by insurances and Medicaid.

ABA is a myth originally sold to parents that it would keep their Autistic child out of an institution. Today, parents are told that with early intervention therapy their child will either be less Autistic or no longer Autistic by elementary school, and can be mainstreamed in typical education classes. ABA is very expensive to pay out of pocket. Essentially, Autism Speaks has justified the big price tag up front will offset the overall burden on resources for an Autistic’s lifetime. The recommendation for this therapy is 40 hours a week for children and toddlers.

The original study that showed the success rate of ABA to be at 50% has never been replicated. In fact, the study of ABA by United States Department of Defense was denounced as a failure. Not just once, but multiple times. Simply stated: ABA doesn’t workIn study after repeated study: ABA (conversion therapy) doesn’t work.

What more recent studies do show: Autistics who experienced ABA therapy are at high risk to develop PTSD and other lifelong trauma-related conditions. Historically, the autism organizations promoting ABA as a cure or solution have silenced Autistic advocates’ opposition. ABA is also known as gay conversion therapy.

The ‘cure’ for Autistics not born yet is the prevention of birth.

The ‘cure’ is a choice to terminate a pregnancy based on ‘autism risk.’ The cure is abortion. This is the same ‘cure’ society has for Down Syndrome.

This is eugenics 2021. Instead of killing Autistics and disabled children in gas chambers or ‘mercy killings’ like in Aktion T4, it’ll happen at the doctor’s office, quietly, one Autistic baby at a time. Different approaches yes, but still eugenics and the extinction of an entire minority group of people.

Fact: You can’t cure Autistics from being Autistic.

Fact: You can’t recover an Autistic from being Autistic.

Fact: You can groom an Autistic to mask and hide their traits. Somewhat. … however, this comes at the expense of the Autistic child, promotes Autistic Burnout (this should not be confused with typical burnout, Autistic Burnout can kill Autistics), and places the Autistic child at high risk for PTSD and other lifelong trauma-related conditions.

[Note: Autism is NOT a disease, but a neurodevelopmental difference and disability.]
