As Seen On Twitter | ABA Apologist & Behaviorist Congratulates Self On An Autistic Tying Shoes & #ActuallyAutistic Respond | November 14, 2021 #BanABA #AutisticHistory

Here’s the solution to laces that doesn’t include 40 hours a week of Autistic Conversion Therapy and a ton of $$$.

ABA helped this family find connection, joy, and love.ABA is a science designed to build skills and help improve ones quality of life. As a behaviour consultant, I supported a family to teach their teenage son with autism how to tie his shoes.

This might sound insignificant, but imagine if your 15 YO child could never tie their shoes – and you had to find shoes without laces for them to wear. In a follow up, I later learned that this boy maintained this skill, bought ‘cool’ sneakers, and made a new friend!

I am so tired of people saying “ABA is science.” Lots of things that are unethical have once been “science.” Does that mean it’s humane? Nope. Also, research shows it’s not effective, based on the 2020 military research study, and can even be harmful.

The thing that really gets me is that finding shoes without laces is seen as a burden for the parent somehow. I have to wear toe shoes for my foot and guess what, they don’t have laces! It’s actually super convenient! And not a problem whatsoever!

I have an 18-year-old that can’t tie shoes – get over it and buy some without laces ffs. The social connotation that we have to tie shoes to matter is ludicrous and absurd. That it’s used as a sign of lacking independence and a pity yelp is utter rubbish.

ABA is based on the flawed premise that autistic differences are due to learned behaviors to be unlearned. When conversion therapy is used on intrinsic traits, it induces trauma reactions that create the false appearance of “success”.

Oh no he couldn’t tie shoes…not like there are alternatives. Not like world would end. Maybe he has motor function issues that make it harder. Why force something so insignificant. 1/2

ABA is abuse. Stop trying to fix autistic children. Accept and accommodation them instead. Support that puts the first will help them thrive.

What is autistic masking, and how does it contribute to suicidality and mental health issues? A guide:

ABA uses teaching strategies designed to support the learner to be successful, track progress, and assess strengths and limitations. It can be so powerful, no matter how small the goal may seem #ABAOntario#ABAWorks#ABAIsAScience

Nope! It’s actually directly tied to conversion therapy through Lovaas (https://catalystjournal.org/index.php/catalyst/article/view/29579…), and while this is a singular personal account, we should say this isn’t the only person we have seen talk about suicidality in Autistics exposed to ABA (http://turtleisaverb.blogspot.com/2018/03/too-emotional.html?m=1…).

Researchers often dismiss anything that doesn’t fit their eugenicist narrative of promoting ABA bit even the US government admits ABA is a complete crap shoot, even if we ignore the fact that forcing Autistics to beat down their identity is unethical

The ‘science’ underlying ABA is flawed, unethical and riddled with conflicts of interest.

ABA = Bad Science + Gaslighting + Autism Market Billions and it also represents legislation without representation in the USA lobbied by parent-founded autism groups who excluded Autistics in positions of leadership and meaning. Non-Autistic celebrities were speaking for us.

Anti-Capitalist Killjoy@AntiKilljoy

ABA is conversion therapy, proven to be ineffective (the DOD released a large scale study result about that recently), and harms the self esteem of the person receiving it. You should be ashamed of what you do for work. Speaking as an “Autism mom” who used it and was 100% wrong

Someone order this behaviorist their Autism Speaks hero cape, stat. Missing out on self-congratulations and self-created inspiration porn here. … As an Autistic mom to Autistic kids up to ages 29 now … let me support you with some lived-knowledge so you can evolve

The Autism Speaks Hero Cape.

Note/Warning:

Autistic people have fought the inclusion of ABA in therapy for us since before Autism Speaks, and other non-Autistic-led autism organizations, started lobbying legislation to get it covered by insurances and Medicaid.

ABA is a myth originally sold to parents that it would keep their Autistic child out of an institution. Today, parents are told that with early intervention therapy their child will either be less Autistic or no longer Autistic by elementary school, and can be mainstreamed in typical education classes. ABA is very expensive to pay out of pocket. Essentially, Autism Speaks has justified the big price tag up front will offset the overall burden on resources for an Autistic’s lifetime. The recommendation for this therapy is 40 hours a week for children and toddlers.

The original study that showed the success rate of ABA to be at 50% has never been replicated. In fact, the study of ABA by United States Department of Defense was denounced as a failure. Not just once, but multiple times. Simply stated: ABA doesn’t workIn study after repeated study: ABA (conversion therapy) doesn’t work.

What more recent studies do show: Autistics who experienced ABA therapy are at high risk to develop PTSD and other lifelong trauma-related conditions. Historically, the autism organizations promoting ABA as a cure or solution have silenced Autistic advocates’ opposition. ABA is also known as gay conversion therapy.

The ‘cure’ for Autistics not born yet is the prevention of birth.

The ‘cure’ is a choice to terminate a pregnancy based on ‘autism risk.’ The cure is abortion. This is the same ‘cure’ society has for Down Syndrome.

This is eugenics 2021. Instead of killing Autistics and disabled children in gas chambers or ‘mercy killings’ like in Aktion T4, it’ll happen at the doctor’s office, quietly, one Autistic baby at a time. Different approaches yes, but still eugenics and the extinction of an entire minority group of people.

Fact: You can’t cure Autistics from being Autistic.

Fact: You can’t recover an Autistic from being Autistic.

Fact: You can groom an Autistic to mask and hide their traits. Somewhat. … however, this comes at the expense of the Autistic child, promotes Autistic Burnout (this should not be confused with typical burnout, Autistic Burnout can kill Autistics), and places the Autistic child at high risk for PTSD and other lifelong trauma-related conditions.

[Note: Autism is NOT a disease, but a neurodevelopmental difference and disability.]

Fact: Vaccines Do Not Cause Autism.
