A few thoughts:
There’s no level playing field here for Autistics in advocacy.
The Today Show panders to Autism Speaks. Let’s remember co-founder Bob Wright was the power of NBC for decades. Alison Singer (NCSA and formerly Autism Speaks) was with NBC too before the autism career.
Let’s talk about how Autistics were kept out of representation in legislation about us – but an actor was put on the legislation floor to testify in lieu of any Autistics back in 2007.
Let’s talk about legislation lobbying powered by the multi-million marketing budgets of these autism organizations … that contributed to the very profitable ABA industry today.
Let’s talk about the difference in advocacy goals. Let’s talk incarceration as care, homelessness as care, autistic abuse, filicide rates (that Autism Speaks used as a MARKETING TOOL to lobby for legislation that included ABA), employment, housing and real healthcare.
And then let’s talk about how many areas Autism Speaks and these autism orgs touch an Autistic person’s life, support systems, education, job programs, medical care, and more. Let’s talk about what they’ve done while excluding Autistics all these years — and then address the issues of measles, mumps, rubella, polio, pertussis outbreaks due to their advocacy work … and the reparations they owe not just Autistics, but everyone affected by their work.
Let’s talk about the Combating Autism Act of 2006/2007 and how Autistics were excluded from that conversation and on purpose so they could get legislation passed for insurance companies to be forced to cover ABA.
ABA was hailed with the failure rate of 50% – it would only help about 50% of Autistics – without it the Autistic child would never achieve anything. So what happens to the ones that don’t improve? And since the idea is Autistics can’t grow and develop new skills without ABA, that makes it OK for the high PTSD rates caused by ABA?
How about we talk about the real reason why Autistics are at war with these parent-founded autism organizations, and why there are two communities ‘the autism community’ and the Autistic community – but only one is ever mentioned.
Let’s talk about how many Autistics were harmed by these organizations and how these organizations benefited by fanning the Autism Wars — and how these autism organizations fought each other – but also used their resources to keep Autistics from being heard and included in a meaningful manner.
Let’s talk about the caregiver needs and support – and also caregiver abuse and what that looks like and how to get help.
Let’s talk about the profitability of being an Autism Mom that can shed a tear on video and create a revenue stream from it – and what those types of videos have done to harm Autistics worldwide.
Let’s talk about how Autistics have been commodified and became multi billion dollar Autism market . … the drug market …. The pseudoscience market … and what’s up with the Hedge Fund managers? … and so much more.
And let’s talk about the stakeholders being minimized and dehumanized here: Autistic people
And watch for the Autistics hired by these Autism orgs, or handpicked to join them to show ‘inclusivity’ and demonize the Autistic and Disability rights movement. They’ll be quoted and refer to the ‘autism community.’ Those are the Autistics that cash in – and hey, we all need a way to work — but the truth is, I don’t value your words the same when backed by $$$ or some other return on investment. Especially when all quotes stick to the affiliated Autism Orgs talking points.
Let’s talk about the future of Autistic people and put a stop those minimizing our disability, civil and human rights fight to some spat on the internet.
And lets remember that Autistic parents of Autistics do exist. And lets remember many non-autistic parents of Autistics are doing the best they know how to in a world that is utterly racked with autism propaganda, myth and bullshit.
And also to remember these organizations profit from divide between non-autistic parents of Autistics and Autistics. This isn’t about disability rights or quality of life for them – it’s about money. It’s not about civil rights or human rights – it’s about their influence on the IACC/NIH/NIMH budget.
These organizations don’t benefit from Autistics at the table in a meaningful manner. No, they lose and they lose millions. Keep in mind, these autism organizations are protecting their financial interests and political power positions AND using their privilege to silence or minimize Autistic voices.
The Today Show is well-known for their affiliation with Autism Speaks.

More With The Today Show
Autistic people have fought the inclusion of ABA in therapy for us since before Autism Speaks, and other non-Autistic-led autism organizations, started lobbying legislation to get it covered by insurances and Medicaid.
ABA is a myth originally sold to parents that it would keep their Autistic child out of an institution. Today, parents are told that with early intervention therapy their child will either be less Autistic or no longer Autistic by elementary school, and can be mainstreamed in typical education classes. ABA is very expensive to pay out of pocket. Essentially, Autism Speaks has justified the big price tag up front will offset the overall burden on resources for an Autistic’s lifetime. The recommendation for this therapy is 40 hours a week for children and toddlers.
The original study that showed the success rate of ABA to be at 50% has never been replicated. In fact, the study of ABA by United States Department of Defense was denounced as a failure. Not just once, but multiple times. Simply stated: ABA doesn’t work. In study after repeated study: ABA (conversion therapy) doesn’t work.
What more recent studies do show: Autistics who experienced ABA therapy are at high risk to develop PTSD and other lifelong trauma-related conditions. Historically, the autism organizations promoting ABA as a cure or solution have silenced Autistic advocates’ opposition. ABA is also known as gay conversion therapy.
The ‘cure’ for Autistics not born yet is the prevention of birth.
The ‘cure’ is a choice to terminate a pregnancy based on ‘autism risk.’ The cure is abortion. This is the same ‘cure’ society has for Down Syndrome.
This is eugenics 2021. Instead of killing Autistics and disabled children in gas chambers or ‘mercy killings’ like in Aktion T4, it’ll happen at the doctor’s office, quietly, one Autistic baby at a time. Different approaches yes, but still eugenics and the extinction of an entire minority group of people.
Fact: You can’t cure Autistics from being Autistic.
Fact: You can’t recover an Autistic from being Autistic.
Fact: You can groom an Autistic to mask and hide their traits. Somewhat. … however, this comes at the expense of the Autistic child, promotes Autistic Burnout (this should not be confused with typical burnout, Autistic Burnout can kill Autistics), and places the Autistic child at high risk for PTSD and other lifelong trauma-related conditions.
[Note: Autism is NOT a disease, but a neurodevelopmental difference and disability.]
Fact: Vaccines Do Not Cause Autism.
