WAKE. BAKE. CAFFEINATE. PODCAST EP. 1 | AUTISM’S ANGELS

(Not an exact transcript.)

So, I’m back with Wake. Bake. Caffeinate. This time in an audio podcast format. But, as always, I’ll be focusing on Autistic and Divergent Community news, activism, trends and happenings.

Today I’ll be talking about a new series launched in honor of “the month” this year called “Deconstruction of Autism Speaks.” While this was launched in time for April, this series will have new entries added throughout the year.

But before that, I’m going to share about a petition on change.orgthat is advocating to celebrities participating in the Color The Spectrum fundraiser event for  NEXT for Autism happening on April 30. NEXT has already released a statement in regards to this campaign, and Autistic activists worldwide and our actual allies, have been responding and responding loudly. So before the end of this podcast, I’ll pop over to Twitter and read some the comments by activists. More on that coming up.

In this podcast, I’ll also share some Autistic History in regards to the founders of NEXT for Autism going back to 2008 in my personal archives.

After that, I’ll pop over to see what’s happening currently on Twitter.

Now that I’m awake, let’s bake. And caffeinate.

Today I’m smoking out of a small bong I named, baby dalek. I named it that … because it looks like a glass dalek. It’s adorable too. Bill surprised me with it from one of my favorite places,  the AK Smoke Shop over on Olive in the Tower District of Fresno here in California.

Big thank you to my non-Autistic but divergent husband, Bill for helping me get this podcast recorded and posted.

‪Just a reminder: Friends don’t let friends #LIUB. Go #Redinstead or #LightItUpGold ‬for #actuallyautistic and #AutismAcceptance#AutisticAndProud

Coming up In this episode wake. Bake. Caffeinate.  I’ll be talking about the Autism Speaks Influence Network, plus a new series started in honor of ‘the month’ this year, titled Deconstruction of Autism Speaks.

I’m going to be sharing about the focus of this new series, and share an article published in Town & Country magazine titled Autism’s Angels from 2006, well I’m going to a segment of it today, and the rest of the segments in future wake. Bake. Caffeinate podcasts.

Oh, before I go further, many many many thanks to  to Sebastian, from Neurodiversity news (Neurodiversity news.net). They shared this Town and Country Article I am going to address some weeks back.  As soon as I read it, I knew it had to be deconstructed and added to the series.  There’s just so much wow  had to share my perspective on what was being shared in the article.

Just wow. what i see is just wow. This article is incredibly triggering and includes content related to filicide ideation, autism cures, ableism, tragedy narrative, eugenics, and far far more.

As much as I’ve seen in my research on Autism Speaks history, this one, I just can’t believe how open they were at first … and when I say they, I mean this autism cabal that formed in 2003 and evolved into the autism speaks influence network we know today.

The Deconstruction of Autism Speaks series will continue all year and my goal is to use these articles to help illustrate the influence and power this cabal\ wielded, their history and the monopoly they created so they could be the most powerful voice on autism in the United States, and much of the world.

This network of organizations and people also locked out Autistics from participating in any meaningful manner in advocacy about us, and they purposefully excluded us from being included in representation in legislation here in the United States.

This autism cabal excluded Autistic adults were to the point we were erased. Many in general society believed autism to be a childhood disorder that was outgrown buy adulthood due to this network’s advocacy work.

Many times in my activism work, I’m met with folks who think Autism Speaks is a good, grass-roots organization that helps, or even saves, autistic children. The reality is, that’s not true.

Autism Speaks, and those in their influence network, founders, board members and some of their staff are connected to some of the most powerful business moguls and companies in the world. This network has successfully commodified Autistic people, while at the same time actively silencing us so they could army-build with other parents against us, and further promote their parent-led solutions for Autistics, including the Combating Autism Act of 2006.

This article will clearly show that the founder’s of Autism Speaks were tied in with government officials at National Institute of Health (NIH) and National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) a couple of years before the organization’s launch. Autism Speaks would merge with other autism organizations to create a monopoly on autism information, dominate donations for research, treatments and the focus on the ‘autism cure’ and ‘save a generation of children.’

But first, I got to rest this brain a moment. Time for a smoke break & regroup.

So far, I’m loving the adaptability of podcasting. I can just pause and rest when needed, and then record again when I’m able to focus intensely and communicate verbally.

I’m going to pop over to Twitter, where Next For Autism released a statement in response to Autistics asking celebrities to cancel their appearance on their Color The Spectrum fundraiser show on April 30 — I’ll read their tweet, the statement and then share some responses to the statement too.

Just a reminder, I know there a lot of information going on at once,  Laura Slatkin is a founder of NEXT for Autism, a founding board member of Autism Speaks, and her company NEST Fragrances has been a long time sponsor of Autism Speaks too.
