Bureau County initiative working to reduce inmates with mental illness

Bureau County has been working on an outreach initiative geared toward reducing the number of people with mental illness being taken to jail.

The county was approved for a $300,000 grant last September that allowed for the creation of crisis intervention teams to assist law enforcement during interactions with people who have criminal backgrounds involving mental illness and substance use disorders.
