e-Speaks || July 24, 2009![]() Autism Speaks Supports Seminar on Gene-Environment Interactions and their Influence on Child Health Made possible by an environmental sciences grant, Autism Speaks recently held the “Autism: Genes and the Enviroment” symposium at the 49th Annual Society of Teratology meeting. The theme of this year’s meeting was “genetic and environmental interactions on maternal and child health.” Although scientists in this area have long appreciated that certain compounds administered prior to or during pregnancy can have long-term detrimental consequences, this was the first time autism was highlighted at this very influential meeting. Mike Doyle Makes Historic Pledge to the Autism Community ![]() Summer Walks Stay Hot in Wisconsin and Washington On July 11, more than 2,100 people participated in Walk Now for Autism events in Milwaukee, Wis. and Tacoma, Wash., raising nearly $150,000. The Milwaukee Walk was one of nine inaugural Walks in 2009, while the Tacoma event celebrated its fourth successful year. IACC Releases 2008 Funding Analysis At the latest Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) meeting, The Subcommittee for Planning the Annual Strategic Plan Process reported on the review of a portfolio analysis of existing spending. The analysis showed that the NIH and Autism Speaks awarded the greatest number of research grants in 2008.
