HHS Secretary Sebelius Speaks on Administration’s Autism Agenda at April 30 IACC Meeting
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins kicked off the April 30 meeting of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC). In addition to announcing the new members of the IACC, including Autism Speaks’ chief science officer Geraldine Dawson, Ph.D., Secretary Sebelius also highlighted the increase in autism spending to $196 million for FY09 due to the Recovery Act.
Autism Awareness Month Highlighted by Progress in Mexico, Brazil and Aruba
Autism Speaks’ Global Autism Public Health Initiative (GAPH) addresses the varying yet often dire needs of autism communities around the world. Today, GAPH partnerships are being explored and developed on nearly every continent. This April, Autism Speaks’ science team participated in national autism conferences in Mexico, Brazil and Aruba.
Walkers and Rockers Raise $570,000 at Weekend Events
The 2010 Walk Now for Autism spring season continued with three successful events in Milwaukee, Tampa Bay and Utah. More than 7,500 people participated, raising over $440,000. Additionally, Cleveland’s Rock ’til It Stops, brought in more than $130,000.
Iowa Becomes the 19th State to Enact Autism Insurance Reform
Last Friday, Iowa Governor Chet Culver signed into enactment the 19th state autism insurance reform law.
The law was included as part of the Standing Appropriations Bill and at this time will only provide coverage of autism therapies for state employees; however, enactment of this law marks the first step in bringing about statewide reform of the private insurance market throughout Iowa and ending insurance discrimination against all individuals with autism.
