Autism Insurance Discrimination Now Outlawed in 17 States
The governors of both Maine and Kentucky signed autism insurance reform bills into law this week, bringing the total number of states that have ended insurance discrimination against children with autism to 17. Autism Speaks is pushing forward with bills in more than 20 states as part of a continuing nationwide effort.
Autism Speaks and the NBA “Tip-Off For a Cure”
On April 14, over 450 guests gathered at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for “Tip-Off for a Cure,” an evening to benefit Autism Speaks and The Gillen Brewer School which raised over $1.3 million. One of our honorees, Bill Bradley, was introduced by his cousin, Taylor Crowe, an adult with autism. Read Taylor’s speech and a recap of the event.
Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation to Expand Epigenetic Studies
The EARLI Study, supported in part by Autism Speaks, recently received support to expand analyses into gene-environment interactions.
This includes support for the Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation, as well as linking this project with the National Children’s Study.
Spring Walk Season Continues in Cumberland
More than 800 enthusiastic supporters from Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania turned out for the Cumberland Tri-State Walk Now for Autism Speaks, which raised $40,000 in its eighth year.

New Awareness Initiative to Launch in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia and Princess Al Johara Bint Faisal Al Saud will lead a new Kingdom-wide autism awareness initiative, which includes a long-term commitment for more autism training centers, better autism screening, and more programs for those affected by autism.
In Their Own Words – Letter to My Younger Self
In this week’s “In Their Own Words” essay, an adult who has Asperger Syndrome shares a letter she wrote, at 26, to her younger self. The idea for the letter was inspired by the parent of a nine-year-old girl, recently diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, who asked the author for advice.
