Thanks to the work of disability rights advocates such as Melissa Reilly, a bill is in committee to remove the ableist r-slur in state legislature in Massachusetts.

“Reilly is an advocate for people with Down syndrome, herself included, and an office assistant for state Sen. Jamie Eldridge two days every week. She’s also a supporter of the archaic language bill, which would change all references in state law from the R-word to “intellectual or developmental disabilities.”
