See how this Autistic Child Exploitation cycle works now?
Autistic Activists called this one out from the start when this parent posted on the Orlando review page about her child’s meltdown in great, sweeping paragraphs. This description was for the benefit of readers and exploited the child’s right to reputation and privacy.
This pattern of exploitation was predicted by Autistic Activists from the moment the parent posted about the experience on Orlando Universal’s Review Page.
Then, as predicted, the review became a national news story and we have had ‘Inspiration Porn’ of this event now sweep the nation in headlines from CNN to USA Today and media outlets in between.
Inspiration Porn offers emotional treats, viral attention for the parent, and kickbacks from the company. This incident was just like the rest. A pattern. A recipe, just add oohs and ahhs. Universal Orlando was generous and gifted the parents with another visit to the park. As Autistic Activists predicted.
Let me be plain:
Child, Park, employee = amazing.
Parent Exploitation = WTF!?!?!? Morning talk shows next?
When we’re done with this news cycle, another ‘inspiration’ story will be published, and we repeat the cycle. Note: NONE of this is to benefit the child. It does however, benefit the parent, readers and outsiders.
Autistics? For us the pattern keeps going the way shit rolls down hill. When you all are done with the ‘feel good’s it keeps getting ickier for us.
Taunts of “Autistic screeching” and other autistic slurs are harsh and horrible on school campuses where autistic students go. Stories like this only flare up the slurs and stigma. Autistic students bear this brunt of another wave of autism ‘brats’ in the news (remember these news cycles from a decade ago?)
Inspiration Porn has the same effect on the quality of life for Autistic people as shock jocks, like Michael Savage, back in the day screaming shrilly about Autistics on planes.
Autistics pay a price for everyone else’s ‘feel goods.’ At the end of the day we get the hate, stigma, otherness and loathing.
When the shit is done rolling downhill and we’re suffering for your feel goods, this is what it looks like:
“Why does this generation have autism and hyperactivity? That is to say, mentally retarded children are in abundance,” Fr Valanmahal asked in a sermon.
“Adultery, masturbation, homosexuality, porn, if you are addicted to these, I say to you in the name of God. . .when you get married and have children, there is a high possibility of bearing these type of children,” he said.
“They lead an animal-like life. They copulate like animals. They bear children like animals. Therefore those children also, will be like animals,” he said.
The priest has also claimed that on previous visits to Ireland, he “cured” one such child in Dublin. He “stood in the middle of the house and said ‘In the name of Jesus, I command, I bind the spirit of autism and hyperactivity that has infested this house. I banish it. Banish it to the foot of Jesus’s cross’,” he said.
Right now, Irish Autistic Activists are working to have this person banned from spreading the ugly in their country in the name of religion. Autistic Activists around the world are doing what we can to support them to stop the spread of hate.
Help Autistic People Stop The Cycle of This Bullshit. Inspiration Porn is bad. It harms the people purportedly being celebrated.
Stop the cycle.
Ban Fr. Dominic Valamnal entry to Ireland.
7. THE RIGHT TO REPUTATION
We will oppose negative publicity campaigns against autistic people as a group.
The majority of autism fundraising is currently generated using “pity” campaigning, suggesting that autism is tragedy, disease, or epidemic that needs to be stopped. Unfortunately, this point of view has propagated itself through to talk shows, news stories, and other forms of media coverage.
The usual technique is to show nothing but footage of (presumably) autistic children having tantrums, and then footage of parents complaining about their lives. It is very rare to see footage of an autistic child engaged in ordinary activities and even rarer to see footage of an autistic adult.
This “tragedy” view of autism is extremely damaging to autistic people, far beyond the scope that any funds generated could justify. It causes employment discrimination, it worsens social isolation, and it leads some parents to give up on helping their children, in favour of holding onto a false hope of a cure.
Some organisations take this even further, using phrases such as “soulless”, “worse than cancer”, or “incapable of love”. One of the biggest anti-autistic organisations, Autism Speaks, even went so far as to create a propaganda film in which a woman talks about wanting to drive herself and her autistic child off a bridge. This statement was made while her autistic child was in the same room.
These campaigns are based on stereotypes, prejudice, and deliberate misrepresentation, and they need to be stopped.
