AutismOne Quackfest: Shut It Down! | Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections, Affecting 1 Child in 200, to Be Featured at AutismOne 2019 Conference

Chicago conference, May 2019, features PANDAS/PANS track from morning through evening, May 24, 2019.

The rising incidence of PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections) and PANS (pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome) will be discussed by doctors, researchers, advocates, and parents at the AutismOne 2019 Conference in Chicago. The track will be featured on Friday, May 24, 2019, and other lectures throughout this 5-day conference will also include related content.

These heartbreaking and often horrifying medical conditions include grave potential consequences to the child, yet are commonly misdiagnosed and the legitimate biomedical component overlooked. Children are seen to experience a frightening and sudden onset of emotional mood swings, significant self-injurious behavior, obsessions, tics, other seemingly bizarre behavior, and more. Accurate diagnosis and treatment are vital to the health and safety of the child and family.

Information from lectures in this track at the AutismOne 2019 Conference includes:

  • Autoimmunity, pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections, and autism spectrum disorders
  • The possible role of molecular mimicry and crossreactivity between microbial polysaccharides and neuronal antigens in the immune reponse and in pathogenesis of sequelae following infections in autism spectrum disorder and PANDAS
  • Autoantibodies associated with autoimmune encephalopathy (AIE) in autism spectrum disorder and potential treatments
  • Pediatric acute neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) as a common co-morbid condition in autism
  • The role of adaptive immunity in neurovascular dysfunction in post-infectious autoimmune encephalitis
  • The recognition of the overlap of PANS with autoimmune encephalopathies such as SREAT (steroid-responsive encephalopathy with anti-thyroid antibodies, formerly known as Hashimoto encephalopathy) and anti-GAD65 encephalopathy
  • Treating infections, closing the blood brain barrier, and decreasing neuroinflammation
  • An integrative treatment approach
  • PANDAS/PANS plans, supports, parental rights, and legislative advocacy

Also screened at the conference will be the film Stolen Childhood, a documentary about PANDAS. A panel will follow.

Said Wendy Nawara, MSW, PANDAS/PANS advocate and consultant: “Bringing attention to pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome is paramount to both the understanding of the frontline practitioner and the parent alike. Being able to receive the most up-to-date knowledge at AutismOne brings about faster diagnosis and more thorough treatments, as well as quicker relief to our children’s struggle.”

The AutismOne 2019 Conference will be held at the beautiful Loews Chicago O’Hare Hotel, just 10 minutes from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, May 22-26, 2019.
