Advocacy Information
Happy holidays from the NAMI California Advocacy Team!

This holiday season, the advocacy team at NAMI California is grateful for our local advocates doggedly pursuing greater access to care for themselves and their loved ones.
This weekend, we had the pleasure of hosting and participating in a teacher training for NAMI Smarts for Advocacy in Los Angeles.13 incredible advocates came together to learn skills for influencing change at the local and state level, and left with the ability to teach those skills to their communities.
As we approach the beginning of a new legislative session, we are thankful to know that Team NAMI members are prepared and eager to tackle issues that include increasing access to care, improving crisis services, and expanding housing across the continuum of care among others.

For suggestions on how we can make this space more useful to YOU, please email us at

Cultural Competence Webinar Series
NAMI California’s three-part Cultural and Linguistic Competence Online Curriculum was created with support from the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA) to enhance NAMI affiliate and community partners’ capacity to better serve and meaningfully engage diverse racial/ethnic communities. Diversity encompasses understanding, respecting, embracing, preserving, and celebrating experiences and perspectives that are different from our own.

Through this interactive webinar participants will cover and discuss a variety of topics and case scenarios that entail cultural self-awareness, awareness of other cultural contexts, an understanding of different dynamics, development of cultural knowledge, and the ability to adapt and practice skills to fit other cultural contexts.

Cultural Competence Webinar Schedule

In Year 2, NAMI California has partnered with the UC Davis Center for Reducing Health Disparities to conduct our Cultural Competence Webinar Series. NAMI CA will take the lead in creating all webinar registration links, surveys, evaluations and polling questions. UC Davis will take the lead utilizing trained facilitators and presenters with expert content knowledge around Cultural Competence and engaging diverse populations in a meaningful manner. This 9-hour series is open to all, and certification is available only upon completion of all three webinars.

Peer-to-Peer Updated Material: No Longer Pilot
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) is now moving out of the pilot stage! This means that we’ve completed final adjustments to the P2P leader guide and participant workbook. The new versions of these manuals will be available on the NAMI Store by Dec. 1. You’ll recognize the new manuals because the word “pilot” will no longer appear on the manual cover pages.

What are the changes?

The leader guide now includes the participant workbook, so when ordering the non-pilot version you no longer need to provide leaders with both a participant workbook and a leader guide. You should continue to provide all class attendees with participant workbooks.

The leader guide now also includes training materials provided to attendees at their in-person training. This means that when ordering the non-pilot version of the leaders guide you no longer need to order separate training materials for training participants! The participant workbook now contains footers with the class number at the bottom of the page.
