I love this, but they are not “Autistic Kids”; they are “kids first” and they happen to have “a diagnosis of autism”. Let’s stop defining people by what they “have” because that id not “what” nor “who” they are.
Autistic people overwhelming prefer Identity First Language. There has been a lot of research on this. The latest poll stands at 84%. Person First Language is seen as patronising and is used by those who speak over us. The main thing is that we get to choose.
The main point is that people with autism are a person first. The diagnosis is information about a medical condition they have not what or who they are. I have ADHD, depression, anxiety, sleep apnea, and some other conditions but I am not any one of those things as a person.
They each affect my behaviors and my lifestyle, but none of them are “who” or “what” I am. I am loving, loyal, kind, creative, silly etc I would never want someone to call me a/an ADHD-ic or depression-ic or anxious-ic or apnea-ic….
