Hey, considering that Pokémon was invented by an autistic person (Satoshi Tajiri), maybe kick some funds to organizations actually run by autistic people. Less than 4% of revenue raised by Autism Speaks goes to services supporting autistic people and our families.
I mean, you are literally profiting off of the intellectual property created by autistic people. That’s great, but if you are looking to give back, follow the lead of autistic advocates and donate to alternative organizations instead.
As a Bellevue-based company, I would suggest you #BoycottAutismSpeaks and instead go with a local organization supporting autistic people and our families, not stealing resources and trying to eliminate us. Below is a list with what they do:
WAAA is a statewide autism advocacy org based in Redmond focusing on supporting families and self-advocates. They have passed legislation which sought to end the abusive practices of restraint & isolation which has led to deaths of autistic youth.
@disrightswa , our state’s protection and advocacy organization, has for decades pushed for disability justice. DRW has decades of experience advocating with autistic people for justice in all aspects of life. 1/2
Follow the money. They promote ‘therapies’ that autistic people want banned. It’s an industry. They get the government to fund abuse and scare parents into believing it’s their child’s only hope. They convince healthcare professionals to recommend it and silence disabled critics.
Hey, a lot of the Autsitic community *really* likes pokemon go. I still play it regularly. I suggest you learn more about the Autistic community and why this group is *not* an ok organization to support. Look at the overwhelming number of hurt replies from Autsitic people.
I’ll be honest – myself and the vast majority of the #ActuallyAutistic community are going to be very disappointed by this news. I do hope you reconsider this. I’m happy to talk with the Pokémon GO team personally in regards to this issue.

So, with @NianticLabs openly supporting Autism Speaks, an organisation that not only actively works to harm #ActuallyAutistic children and ignore adults, but then takes pride in funding research that undermines our existence……
Autism Speaks is an organisation that has, both historically and recently, funded projects and led campaigns that have created significant stigma towards autistic children and silenced the voices of autistic adults. I implore you reconsider this action.
There are other charities to support. There are better ways to support autistic people. I will be composing an email to send to Niantic in the near future in regards to this. It’ll be a template available to anyone who wishes to use it.
No please don’t Autism Speaks have done more harm than any good. They see autistic people as broken, as burdens and are looking to eliminate us. PLEASE dig deeper and talk to autistic people themselves. We don’t want this/ This move has traumed many.
I just deleted Pokémon Go. You cannot pretend to be supporting the needs of autistic people when you give money to a group that isn’t represented by autistic people. You cannot pretend to be supporting autistic people when you support an organization that wants to end autism.

what’s fun is that in their recent reports, they’ve combined family services with their awareness campaigns, to hide how little actually goes to communities and make it seem they help more than they do
@NianticLabs Autism Speaks is opposed by the majority of autistic people. They portray us as burdens. They sympathize with people who kill us. Only 4% of their earnings go to family services. Please support better organizations like @awnnetwork_ or @ASAN_DC
As an actually autistic person and Pokemon Go trainer, please do not support Autism Speaks! Despite some of its recent superficial changes, it remains an org that acts against the autistic community’s interest, and spreads hateful stigma and info about autism
Please reconsider this. @PokemonGoApp is incredibly popular amongst the #ActuallyAutistic community, and to see you working with an organisation that is harmful towards us is very upsetting. Please work directly with #ActuallyAutistic people. Support us by including us.
Before you donate do consider the facts. the chart shows only 4% of donations goes to families of autistics, But the CEOs each pocket a very decent salary & the research is to cure autism by gene editing, eugenics. Doesn’t seem very charitable now eh #ActuallyAutistic
Please, PLEASE reconsider this. Autism Speaks cause nothing but harm to Autistic People inside the US and beyond. Please, don’t partner with this hateful organisation. A large portion of your support base is Autistic. Listen to them, not Autism Speaks.
Companies partnering with autism speaks is always a bad move for autistics and in this case it’s probably a bad move for you too, you have a lot of autistic customers and many autistics won’t support a company that supports autism speaks
Supporting Autism Speaks shows a complete lack of understanding of autism issues. AS do not support or represent autistic people. ASAN would be a far better choice. Which considering that the creator of Pokémon is said to have been autistic makes this endorsement very ironic.
@NianticLabs I get the sentiment. But Autism speaks has prompted abuse and hate towards people on the Autism Spectrum. This ranges from supporting Applied Behavioral Analysis to driving their only Autistic board member EVER to quit. They prey on desperation.
I love your game, but I will abandon the entire Pokémon franchise if you go through with this. Autism Speaks is a terrible group searching for ways to eradicate autism, sucking up huge amounts of money and pushing autistic people out of the conversation. #BoycottAutismSpeaks
Pokémon is my life. One of my favourite things alongside my TGC collection is my shiny Zapdos on Pokémon Go. I’m autistic, and like the rest of the people replying to this tweet, I hate Autism Speaks and everything it stands for. Please listen to us.
