It attempts to “contextualize” the straw ban as good for poor poc which is presented as a reason to consider chucking the disabled people who rely on them under the bus
-
The author however does not explain how a straw ban will help them because the threat to them is plastic in general not straws specifically

and as I’ve already explained a straw ban will do fuck all to actually reduce plastic

So thanks
@newrepublic for publishing something that is both racist and ableist You have not offered anything new. You’ve just used poor POC as a red herring to tacitly justify hurting disabled people -
I mean the author specifically bring up starbucks to compliment but their new strawless lids actually use more plastic than the straw lid combo
-
banning straws in favour of more plastic is hurting those people you want us to consider instead of disabled people
-
So sorry, banning straws is not helping the poor and even suggesting that is might is just irresponsible but then so is suggesting that straw bans will reduce plastic
-
As a copy editor, one thing I notice is that in the story three people are cited: “one disabled blogger”, “one Twitter user”, and “journalist Parker Molloy”. And, as a copy editor, I get one possible reason why, but it’s still not a great look.

Scrolling through her twitter feed was PAINFUL. So much speaking over disabled folks. So much tokenizing POC in an attempt to legitimize an oppressive and largely ineffective action
