Right now, the FDA is coming up on 2 YEARS of failing to release a rule that would end the use of electric shock devices on disabled people at the Judge Rotenberg Center. The JRC is the only facility in the US that uses this device, known as the Graduated Electronic Decelerator (GED), which is stronger than a police taser.
The UN has called the use of GED torture. An FDA panel admitted that the devices did not work to stop people from hurting themselves, and that they actively caused physical and emotional harm.
The FDA created a rule that would end the use of GED-but it has not been released. Every day they wait, our community members at the JRC face torture for everything from stimming to refusing to take off their coats. The time to hold the FDA accountable isn’t in 2 more years-it is right now.
- Call the office of FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb at (301) 796-5000, and ask the FDA to release the regulation. You can use this script:My name is [NAME] and I am from [City, State]. I’m calling on Commissioner Gottlieb to ban the GED shock devices used at the Judge Rotenberg Center. The FDA has had a final rule to ban these devices ready since 2016, but the Commissioner still hasn’t released it. Every day, disabled people are being tortured with these devices. Commissioner Gottlieb needs to immediately release the rule banning the GED. We’ve waited long enough.
April 24th is our next call-in day, when the disability community can speak out together. Just like in the past, we’ll also be sharing tips, scripts, and other ways to act if your disability makes calling difficult. Mark yourself as “Going” on the event now, to get reminders leading up to the event.
- Email Commissioner Gottlieb at CommissionerFDA@fda.hhs.gov, and CC: the FDA at DICE@FDA.hhs.gov. Use the subject line Judge Rotenberg Center. You can use the same script you did while calling.
- Sign the petition to have the FDA release the regulation against the use of GED.
- Spread the word on social media using the hashtag #StopTheShock. Every time you use the hashtag, encourage folks to visit our page and take action. Our JRC campaign page gives you sample tweets and social media posts you can use.
Many of you have already emailed, called, signed the petition, and asked your friends to do the same – thank you, and keep up the good work! We’re starting to make our voices heard, but we need to speak out even louder and keep the pressure up. It’s time to flood the FDA with calls, emails, and signatures until they get the message: this torture must end NOW.
