AUTISTICS NOW 1 IN 40

The CDC has broadcasted the National Health Center for Health Statistics latest (2016) prevalence rate for autism.

Using information gathered from the National Health Information Survey (NHIS), they reported a 2016 rate of 2.47%, or 1 in 40 American children/adolescents.

This figure now replaces the widely used 1 in 68 statistic announced by the CDC back in 2014.

As you can see in the associated graph, autism rates are growing faster than ever, about as fast as knowledge regarding autism’s existence is also growing.

The Future of Autism

A Different Sort of Solitude

“Every time I think about those assholes I go crosseyed and black out,” I said.

“I think it’s important,” she said. “I didn’t even know they were evil until you explained why.”

“I don’t think I could write articulately about the subject. It just pisses me off too much.”

“If you can talk about it, you can write about it.”

Well, all right. Let’s give it a shot.

I went to the website of Autism Speaks and looked up their mission statement. I also looked up the mission statement of Autism Speaks Canada, because I’m Canadian. The mission statements are pretty much the same, so for my purposes I’ll be referring to the one found on the international website.

It starts by stating, “At Autism Speaks, our goal is to change the future for people who struggle…

Battlestar Galactica and Idioms

Cambria's Big Fat Autistic Blog

CW: Swearing References

It also made me feel for the FCC censor. I’ll tell you why.

It took me until late in middle school to understand most idioms. Idioms, for those who don’t know, are general sayings that mean something else. For an autistic, that can be confusing. It’s just about as confusing as the dialogue on the new Battlestar Galactica. But the teacher of my advanced English class decided to teach us about idioms – and the explanations of popular idioms at the time. I struggle with the idioms of the younger…
